The first official trailer for the upcoming Universal Pictures release The Bourne Legacy has been released. The film stars Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, and Rachel Weisz, along with Bourne veterans Joan Allen, Albert Finney, and David Strathairn. It’s scheduled for an August 3, 2012 release.
The trailer conceals rather than reveals images from the film. It’s a composite of brief vignettes, accompanied by suspenseful crescendo-type music and fragments of marketing dialogue. Action is not yet an issue. Rather, the trailer’s main agenda is to establish the story and situate it in the chronology of the Bourne franchise. The Bourne Legacy is a sequel to the Bourne trilogy. Edward Norton voices the key line in this context: “Jason Bourne was just the tip of the iceberg.”
Furthermore, the trailer differentiates the new film from its predecessors by positing Renner’s agent as superior to Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne. It thus promises more action, although it never shows it. This trailer is supposed to build anticipation.
The second trailer will probably provide more concrete insights into the film’s action and story.
Director Tony Gilroy is an inexperienced action filmmaker, whose involvement indubitably promises an intricate and politically charged story that will continue the series’ engagement with geo-political issues.
Bourne is on its way to theaters.
