Robert Pattinson has signed on to play Lawrence of Arabia in Werner Herzog’s forthcoming film, Queen of the Desert.
Pattinson’s role in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis (2012) is currently garnering favorable reviews. However, Peter O’Toole’s Oscar-nominated performance in the 1962 film, Lawrence of Arabia, has set the bar high for Pattinson.
It would seem Pattinson’s Lawrence of Arabia will be playing a supporting role in Herzog’s film as it will focus more on Gertrude Bell, referred to as “the female Lawrence of Arabia,” to be played by Naomi Watts.
Gertrude Bell was an English writer, explorer, archaeologist, political administrator, and spy. Because of her extensive knowledge and travels, she was highly influential both throughout the First World War and in British imperial policy-making. She also played an integral role in establishing the modern state of Iraq during the early 1920s.
