Bryan Singer, director of the first two cinematic X-Men installments, has confirmed the return of Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier and Ian McKellen as Magneto in the next X-Men film, Days of Future Past. The sequel to 2011’s X-Men: First Class will see a very direct connection between the original cast and the younger team that was featured in the reboot. Those who are familiar with the Days of Future Past story from the comics will know that the older versions of the characters are part of a dystopian, alternate future that must be prevented. How closely the movie will adhere to this of course remains to be seen.
Other actors were also officially announced to be reprising their roles from First Class today. Singer tweeted, “I’d like to officially welcome back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult to X-Men: Days Of Future Past.” Their characters were younger versions of Xavier, Mystique, Magneto, and Beast, respectively. The film is set for a 2014 release date.
