007.com has revealed the first teaser poster for the upcoming James Bond film, Skyfall. The poster launches what will undoubtedly be a massive transmedia campaign to promote the film before its European release on October 26, 2012 (as usual American audiences will have to wait a while longer to see the newest adventures of the agent with the license to kill, until November 9, to be precise). Next week, on May 21, in typical tie-in-marketing fashion, the first teaser trailer of Skyfall will be released. The new Bond is well on its way.
The poster itself is steeped in Bond traditionalism, with the background replicating the iconic gun barrel imagery that introduces every new adventure (with the exception of the first-ever sequel in the franchise, 2008’s Quantum of Solace). The black-and-white composition harkens back to Casino Royale (2006), Daniel Craig’s first mission as a member of her majesty’s secret service. The poster thus establishes continuity between the reboot and the third installment of the Craig era, while not blatantly ignoring but obliquely neglecting Quantum of Solace, which was a box-office success but did not appeal to die-hard Bond aficionados. Simply judged by the enigmatic poster, Skyfall looks promising (which, alas, also applied to Quantum).
