DC Comics has introduced a new superhero: the Islamic Green Lantern, Simon Baz.
Baz, an Arab-American from Dearborn, Michigan with a criminal record for street racing leaves behind his criminal past to join the intergalactic police force, Green Lantern Corps. His arm is tattooed with the Arabic word for “courage,” “al-shuja’a.”
Thor Parker of New York’s Midtown Comics reacts to the recent effort to diversify comic book heroes by stating, “In typical comic books there’s a big handsome white guy and that’s it. But that’s not the world we live in, and comics are reflecting that.”
Baz is the latest in the effort to diversify comic book superheroes, following in the footsteps of a gay Green Lantern and Marvel’s Miles Morales, a half black, half Latino Spider-Man.
The next Green Lantern comic will be released in October.
