I’ll bet you watched the Super Bowl yesterday. But I’ll also bet you didn’t watch for the game. If you’re like me (a Packers’ fan, at least we lost to the Super Bowl champs), you tuned in to to see the VW Star Wars commercial that we previewed two weeks ago. With over 100 million people watching and a 30 second spot coming in at about $3.5 million, it was another year in heavy spending between stops in the action on the gridiron. Overall, the pop culture ads were uninspired for the most part. Here are the best, most mediocre, and worst of the evening:
–The Avengers trailer – New footage, Hulk smashiness, more epicness! May can’t arrive soon enough!
–Pepsi – “Queen” – sorry! – “King” Elton John was just as lame as the commercial, but the ad was all redeemed by
Flavor Flav and his sundial necklace.
–Battleship – Looks like Transformers with boats. I don’t remember the game being anything like that trailer looks, but it has Liam Neeson, and that’s enough for me.
–Volkswagen fat dog and the new Beetle – After an enjoyable commercial with pet charm (there were a LOT of animal ads this year), we were treated to the Star Wars reference from two weeks ago. The Cantina quick scene was funny but compared to the Bark Side, a total let down. I like the Darth Vader kid more – and not just because I don’t want Vader Force-choking me.
–Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D Trailer – No Jar-Jar? If Lucas decided to make changes to this one and removed Jar-Jar, it might be the best prequel yet.
–The Lorax Trailer – The film could have promise and a lot of Vampire Weekend.
–GI Joe 2 Trailer – More big name action stars (The Rock! Bruce Willis!) and cliff sword fighting. This movie will probably be terrible, but it’s going to accomplish exactly what it sets out to do – be a summer popcorn blockbuster.
Ugh, Shame On Your Ad Agency!:
–Act of Valor Trailer – Are we sure this is a movie and not an Army commercial?
–John Carter Trailer – I’ve seen this movie before. It’s called Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
