Steven Soderbergh’s newest film Haywire, which boasts an impressive ensemble cast of MMA star Gina Carano, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, and Michael Fassbender, will open on January 20. Hulu has just released a five-minute video to promote the release of the film. In contrast to the trailers, this video offers an uninterrupted look at one of the film’s numerous fight sequences.
While the scene essentially builds suspense, it’s primarily notable for its presentation of action. Based entirely on this video footage, it’s possible to conjecture that Soderbergh refuses to replicate the contemporary action aesthetic, with its excessive cutting and ultra-close shots. The action is judiciously choreographed and staged. As a result, the fight feels real. The impact of the blows is tangible.
The video establishes Gina Carano as a tough action heroine who engages in wild physical combat. It will be interesting to see whether Soderbergh can carry this ferociousness over to the entirety of the film. The video certainly promises a serious action exercise.
Haywire hits theaters on January 20.
